In the rest of the body, calcium supports heart function, circulation, nerve function and muscle tone.

Deficiencies can lead to rickets, poor blood clotting, osteoporosis and increased risk of fractures. Over-retention can cause hypercalcemia (elevated levels of calcium in the blood), impaired kidney function and decreased absorption of other minerals.
